Getting close to a kingfisher is never easy, but one spring I discovered a nest in the bank above a small stream. Several times a day, the parents returned with fish for their chicks, pausing on a branch for a few brief seconds before darting through the entrance. I therefore set up my hide before sunset and waited for them to return with their catch. It was an amazing experience to be so close to the shy bird that did not notice my presence.
