When photographing short-eared owls, I observed how aggressive and remarkably successful the kestrels were at stealing prey from them. Unable to locate the voles beneath the snow themselves, the kestrels seem to have adopted this strategy to secure food. This image captures the exact moment when a kestrel has just stolen a vole from a short-eared owl. I particularly like the expression of the owl in this situation.
